Chatsworth Farm Shop @ Pilsley
Pilsley, Bakewell DE45 1UF. 01246 565411 Definitely worth a visit, under ten minutes away in the car. The first farm-shop of its kind and still thriving. Full of delicious local produce, fresh fruit and veg, a fantastic butchers, fish counter and deli section. Charming, knowledgable staff. Good for picking up a few treats.
New Close Farm Shop @ Bakewell
The nearby town of Bakewell has a full selection of food shopping including a large Co-op and an very good Aldi, a butchers (see above), a cheese shop, a deli, a pasty shop, many gift shops, endless Bakewell Tart purveyors and a rather good fudge shop. Monday is Market Day in Bakewell with stalls in the streets selling fruit and vegetables, flowers, wooly hats and socks and lots of general household goods. There is also a livestock market every Monday at the show ground (a short walk over the bridge from the town centre) where all of the local sheep and cattle farmers do their trade - a snapshot of local life. Parking can be tricky on Market Days but the main village car park on Granby Road (DE45 1ES) is huge and generally has space.
This very popular market is generally held on the last Saturday of every month (check the link above for dates) at the Agricultural Business Centre in Bakewell. Up to 70 stalls are manned by local producers selling delicious treats. It is s great spot to grab a late breakfast or early lunch on the move, to buy original gifts or to stock your picnic basket. There is plenty of parking for this market day at the Agricultural Business Centre
Wine Merchant - John Hattersley
The Wine Warehouse, Milford, Bakewell DE45 1DX 01629 815255 The best wine shop in Bakewell. It can be found in the collection of old warehouse buildings on your left after the Aldi supermarket, before you get into the centre of Bakewell.
Situated in the Dilk familiy’s farmyard, on the side of the main road through the nearby village of Hassop (opposite Doughology Pizza, see below) is a super fresh same day milk vending-machine. You can fill a take-away bottle with the white stuff or make a milkshake. There are also fresh free-range eggs for sale. A great local lesson in how to keep your ‘food miles’ to a minimum! Take coins only. Open 7 days a week 7am until 7pm. Hone Farm, Hassop Road, Hassop DE45 1NU
Good Local Pubs
The Pack Horse @ Little Longstone
Main Street, Little Longstone, Bakewell DE45 1NN. 01629 640471 Really lovely, very busy, friendly little local pub, several log fires, low roof, local beers and good seasonal food which is often locally-sourced. You will always need to book a table to eat at weekends. A nice 25 minute walk (or 3 minute drive) from the cottage.
The Ashford Arms @ Ashford-in-the-Water
Opened in Spring of 2024 the AShford Arms is our newest village pub. Fun and cosy decoration, log fires and a sheltered garden should make this a great destination. The food served in its sister restaurants is consistently good so we have high hopes for this village newcomer. Take the Little Lane footpath from the fields below the cottages towards the village and remember to take a left off Ashford Lane onto Vicarage Lane to avoid any traffic on the main road and enjoy the pretty back streets of the village. Less than 15 minutes walk down the hill into Ashford but don’t forget that with a full belly it’s slower coming uphill on the way home!
The Bull’s Head @ Ashford-in-the-Water
Church Street, Ashford-in-the-Water. 01629 812931 Again a lovely local pub in the centre of the village, good simple food, really pretty beer garden at the rear with boules overlooking the village green. 15 minutes walk downhill from the cottage.
Riverside Brewery, Buxton road, Bakewell DE45 1GS 01629 815999. Open from noon daily, this is our local brewery tap room. Created by the owners of Thornbridge Hall this is a lively bar and pizza joint, located in a warehouse in the busy Industrial Estate on the outskirts of Bakewell. Much more inviting than it sounds - you can pop in for a pint and a pizza or attend one of their regular events, music evenings and live screenings of many of the ‘big games’.
Monsal Trail, Bakewell DE45 1NL. 01629 640250 A basic pub with simple snacks. The draw is the view from Monsal Head when you take your drink outside. A good 30 minute walk up from the cottage over the fields. On sunny days there is an ice-cream van in the car park serving locally produced ice-cream, a welcome treat for walkers!
Bretton, Hope Valley S32 5QD 01433 630856 Claiming to be the highest pub in Derbyshire and dating from 1597 this is certainly one to go to for the views! Highly recommended for a sundown pint on a calm evening, the glorious rolling landscape of the White Peak is laid out before you. See if you can spot your cottage from the hilltop. It serves the standard pub grub, pies and a fine roast beef Sunday Lunch.
Devonshire Square, Beeley, Matlock DE4 2NR. 01629 733259 A traditional pub with gastropub food, owned by Chatsworth, in the super-quaint village of Beeley. A good stop after a day at Chatsworth.
Another of the Chatsworth-owned pubs but currently the one with the best chef! Delicious, creative food often with locally sourced ingredients. Sunday Lunch is a treat. Located in the centre of the small village of Pilsley, there is quiet beer garden, a neighbouring wildlife art gallery and an interiors shop. It is also dangerously handy for some post-lunch shopping at the Chatsworth Farm Shop (see above). Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Booking recommended 01246 565405.
Bakewell Rd, Rowsley, Matlock DE4 2EB. 01629 733518 Run by the owners of Haddon Hall, this is a very pretty pub/hotel with quiet garden and an old fashioned panelled bar. Interesting, contemporary and very accomplished food. Lunch in their pretty garden by the river is always a delight.
The Blind Bull @ Little Hucklow
Little Hucklow SK17 8RT 01298 211949 Our current favourite for a great Sunday lunch, although the interesting weekday menu is also rather good. Renovated and opened in 2020 this is a simple rustic pub with some seriously good food. Service is very smiley and helpful and the Yorkshire puddings have to be seen to be believed! Closed Tuesdays.

Rafter's at The Riverside @ Ashford-in-the-Water
Fennel Street, Ashford-in-the-Water DE45 1QF This is the new opening in the village and promises great, great things. It's sister restaurant in Sheffield is considered to serve some of the best and most creative food in the city and, located in this charming old village hotel, the cooking here will not disappoint. We couldn't be happier to have these innovative chefs on our doorstep for special occasions. Lovage by Lee Smith @ Bakewell
Bath Street, Bakewell. DE45 1DS 01629 815613 An exciting new restaurant which opened in the summer of 2020 in the centre of Bakewell. Lee Smith is a locally born chef who, having earned a Michelin Star at his previous restaurant, has returned to the area to open his own place. Receiving rave reviews, the food is modern British, often locally sourced, with an interesting wine list. A bit of a treat, one needs to book in advance to secure a table. Open for dinner Thursday - Saturday it is has recently extended it's opening hours to include several lunch services - see their website for details.
Bath Street, Bakewell. DE45 1DS 01629 815613 This coffee shop occupies half of the Lovage restaurant (reviewed above). Open every day except Tuesday for breakfast, brunch and lunch. The Square, Main Rd, Hathersage, Hope Valley S32 1BB. 01433 650725 A properly good, quite smart, Indian restaurant in the quaint village of Hathersage. There is a sister restaurant in Matlock. If you ask really nicely and are fairly hungry they may even deliver to the cottage…
